The Red Lion

The Red Lion , is one of the town’s most historic and recognizable buildings. With a history stretching back several centuries, it has been an important part of Wendover’s social and economic life.

The Red Lion also boasted having the oldest barmaid working there back in 2014, local Dolly Saville, who is sadly no longer with us, celebrated her 100th birthday. A local icon who was still working at one of Wendover's iconic public houses.

Richard Carr attended her birthday celebrations and surprised her with a visit from his mother, who worked with Dolly back in the 1970's.

Early History:

  • The Red Lion dates back to at least the 16th century, making it one of Wendover's oldest establishments. Like many coaching inns of the period, it provided food, drink, and lodging for travelers.
  • Wendover’s location on the old road between London and Aylesbury made it a strategic stopping point for stagecoaches, traders, and travelers. As a result, the Red Lion became a bustling hub of activity.

Coaching Inn Era:

  • During the 18th and early 19th centuries, the Red Lion thrived as a coaching inn. At that time, travel by horse-drawn coach was common, and Wendover’s position on the route between London and the Midlands made it a key stop.
  • Coaching inns like the Red Lion were essential, providing stables for horses, accommodation for passengers, and a place for meals and refreshments. The Red Lion would have been a lively place, with coaches arriving regularly, and it served as a center for local news, business, and social gatherings.

Architectural Features:

  • The building itself retains much of its historic character, with timber-framed construction and traditional features that reflect its long history. It has been modified and restored over time, but many original elements remain, giving the pub a classic, old-world charm.
  • The Red Lion is known for its distinctive red lion sign and has likely displayed some version of this sign for centuries, as the red lion was a common heraldic symbol used in pub names across England.

Notable Events and Cultural Significance:

  • Like many old inns, the Red Lion has been a witness to various historical events and local stories. It was a meeting place for local gatherings, including town business and social events.
  • Over the centuries, the pub has been a central part of Wendover’s community life, serving not only travelers but also local residents as a place to socialize, conduct business, and celebrate.

Folklore and Legends:

  • Like many old inns, the Red Lion is rumored to have its share of ghost stories and local legends, adding to its mystique. While these tales are often part of the pub's charm, they also connect the building to Wendover's deep historical roots.
  •

The Red Lion Public House is thus much more than just a place for food and drink. It is a living piece of Wendover’s history, reflecting the town’s development over the centuries and its role as a stop on important travel routes. Its long-standing presence has made it a cornerstone of the community and an emblem of Wendover's heritage.
