A Scrumdiddlyumptious Eye-Popping Mural Unveiled at Great Missenden Station

A large-scale mural has been unveiled at Great Missenden station, the result of a collaborative project between The Roald Dahl Museum, sixth form students from The Misbourne school, and renowned mural artist Sólveig Magnúsdóttir.

The official unveiling on 28 March marks the culmination of months of dedicated effort by the project team. The students played a crucial role in every stage of the process, from interviewing and selecting the project artist to engaging in creative workshops and making key decisions about the mural’s design and composition.

Throughout the project, students explored Roald Dahl’s creative process and learned how the local area influenced many of his beloved stories and characters. They then developed their own visual ideas, integrating elements of Great Missenden, Dahl’s literary works, and personal symbols that held meaning for them.

Emma Bedlow, Project Manager for The Roald Dahl Museum, expressed her delight at the outcome: “It’s been a pleasure to work with students from The Misbourne and Sólveig. We’re so proud of the final mural, which is a testament to all the hard work that has gone into developing the project. It was fantastic to see the students immerse themselves in the artist workshops and create such a wonderful focal point for the station.”

Zach Bailey, Regional Growth Manager at Chiltern Railways, also praised the initiative: “We are delighted to have supported The Roald Dahl Museum and The Misbourne school in creating an inspiring mural for Great Missenden station. The mural fosters a sense of community, brightening the journeys of both daily commuters and visitors exploring the beautiful Chilterns.”

Mural artist Sólveig Magnúsdóttir reflected on her experience: “It was such a pleasure to dive into Roald Dahl’s highly visual worlds while collaborating with the wonderful team at The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre and engaging with the brilliant creativity of The Misbourne students. The result is a joyful mishmash of creatures and ideas, which we hope brings a smile to passersby or sparks their curiosity about the area.”

This initiative, funded by Chiltern Railways’ Community Investment Fund, not only provided students with practical, real-world creative skills but also boosted their confidence. The mural now serves as an inspiring ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’ to the village of Great Missenden, celebrating its rich literary and cultural heritage.
