Aylesbury Police issue advice after rise in rural crime

Police in Aylesbury gave some advice to the rural communities in the town, after they have seen a recent increase in Rural Crime offences.

They said this:

"Think in layers. The more layers of security there are, the harder it is for thieves and it increases the chance of them being caught.

Theft of Horseboxes and Trailers:

· Ensure you record details of the chassis and the frame numbers.
· Etch your postcode into a concealed location – preferably on the framework.
· Take photographs. This helps us identify it if it is recovered.
· Is it parked in a well-lit area with CCTV?

Stables:

· Never leave Tack laying around the yard. Always ensure that it is secured away.
· Consider installing CCTV.
· Ensure the area is well lit.
· Take pictures of valuable items and record any serial numbers.

Tool Thefts:

· Mark tools with your Postcode by etching it or using a UV or permanent marker. This enables us to identify that they are yours should we recover them.
· Do not leave tools on display in your vehicle.
· Consider installing a Lock Box which is bolted to the base of the van.
· Record all serial numbers and take photographs.
· Keep the keys to any vehicle secure.
· If you need to keep tools in a vehicle, is it alarmed? Is it parked in a well-lit area? Is there CCTV covering the location?
· Always park the rear of your van against a wall.

You may need to “think outside the box”. For instance, a cheap way of alarming tools or valuable equipment is to use inexpensive personal attack alarms. Fix the alarm to the item securely with a cable tie. When storing the item, thread a fixed wire or some fishing line through the loop on the alarm and fix it to a secure point. Try to keep it discreet so the thief cannot see it. When they try to remove or move the item, the alarm will go off.
