Bucks based Hilltops Ukrainian Support Community encouraging new host families to come forward

It comes as many Ukrainian guests who have settled in the county risk being uprooted again as the minimum 6 month period for hosts who were paid to provided a home is coming to an end.

The Government supported Family for Homes scheme set up earlier this year called on the British public to open their homes to the swathes of refugees fleeing the Ukrainian invasion.

Families were asked to provide a home or spare room rent-free for 6 months up to maximum of 12 months, in return they received £350 per
month towards living expenses.

With the 6 month term looming many families are unsure of next steps as many host families look to pass the baton on to new hosts within their
communities.

Hilltops Ukrainian Support Community (HUSC), a collective of 40 host families and 153 volunteers, have provided welcome packs,
coordinated donations, and set up and run a shop ensuring their guests had access to clothing and other items they require.

Sarah Graham of the Hilltops Ukrainian Support Community said, "We are looking for a second wave of hosts, to cover a period of up to 6 months,
for our Ukrainian friends who are already part of an existing and supportive community group. If you would like to make a difference to the lives of Ukrainians and can offer a spare room in your home, it can be a hugely rewarding experience".

“We applaud the Government in supporting the people of Ukraine but they also need to do more to ensure people are able to live
independently, and with dignity, by removing some of the barriers to renting private accommodation.  We understand from the Government that in some instances, councils are managing this problem by running schemes in which the council acts as a guarantor for the household. We call on the council to stand as guarantor for approved refugees (those awarded visas) and for the government to provide clearer direction and guidance to local authorities."
