Bucks rower set for epic charity challenge

A man from Bucks will be one of the oldest pair to row across any ocean if he manages to row 3,000 miles from The Canaries to Antigua in December.

Little Marlow’s Guy Rigby, 66, and David Murray aim to finish by February in aid of UnLtd, a foundation for social entrepreneurs.

Guy explained: “Having spent most of my life working with and advising entrepreneurs, I recently become much more interested in the concept of social entrepreneurship, where people and planet, as well as profit, are at the centre of the business agenda.

“Fundraising to enable and support this great cause quickly became my focus and, with no desire to climb a mountain or run multiple marathons, I settled on the idea of a water-based activity. Having started rowing at Marlow Rowing Club on the Thames in 2014, rowing seemed like an appropriate choice.”

The crossing is the world’s toughest rowing race. Crews test the limit of their physical and mental strength to achieve the unthinkable, rowing 3,000 miles unaided across the Atlantic Ocean.

Guy said “I hope we’re going to get there safely and in a sensible time. There are two of us out there so our primary objective is to remain as friends and support each other. We’ll be rowing two hours on two hours off for 24 hours a day, grabbing sleep of 90 minutes in between our rowing sessions.

“We’ll be catapulted from our comfort zone into a harsh environment. We expect to suffer from extreme sea sickness. Hopefully we’ll settle into a routine after the first week and life will become more tolerable.

“There are plenty of sea creatures around. There’s the danger of being hit by some large ship and we need to go over the side once a week to scrub the bottom of the boat so we’ll have to have a shark watch to see that we are going to be safe while we are doing it.”
