Community and school gardens across the country have been celebrated this week in Community Garden Week and Aylesbury is no exception.
The first Aylesbury Garden Town Community Food Growing Project was set up two years ago on a piece of land next to St Peter’s Church in Quarrendon. It’s gone from strength to strength with lots of people involved including the Brownies and local schools.
Ceri Perkins is Community Partnership Projects Lead for Aylesbury Garden Town and said she isn’t surprised about the success. There are now a further seven projects springing up all over Aylesbury
She explained: “Gardening is something that is fun for all ages and doing it with other people makes it even more enjoyable as you grow things together and you can cook and eat them as well.”
Ceri said she’s noticed an increase in community spirit as a result of the pandemic and said she hopes this continues as restrictions are eased.
She commented: “Community food growing brings people together being active, learning something new and its really good for your mind, body and your soul. As part of Aylesbury becoming a garden town, healthy living is a real focus and we hope people will join us and get involved.”
