The link from Wendover Road to Stoke Mandeville is a step closer after the Government contributed £13.4m to the scheme. The cash injection is 11% of the expected overall cost.
It's part of the Government’s commitment to prioritise value for money road schemes while renewing the national infrastructure. The work will see a 1.1km two lane dual carriageway link road between Lower Road and the A413 Wendover Road, and is expected to speed up car and bus journeys, provide walking and cycling routes, reduce air pollution and improve safety. It could also see to up to 1,000 homes added to the local area.
Location of works
Phase 1: B4443 Lower Road to A413 Wendover Road.
Phase 2: B4443 Lower Road to the future junction with South West Aylesbury Link Road and Stoke Mandeville Relief Road.
The Government is determined to speed up the delivery of infrastructure across the UK, which includes expanding the UK’s road network for economic growth. As well as faster journeys, drivers are also set to benefit from improved road surfaces, with record £1.6 billion investment to fill the equivalent of seven million potholes and repair roads, including £20.7 million for roads Buckinghamshire.
The Future of Roads Minister, Lilian Greenwood, said:
“Traffic around Aylesbury has been too slow for too long, producing air pollution in the town centre and discouraging people from using local buses. “We’re giving this vital scheme the green light, and providing £13.4m, which will improve local journeys in Buckinghamshire and boost the economy beyond.”
Martin Tett is Leader of Buckinghamshire Council. He said:
“Once complete, the South East Aylesbury Link Road (SEARL) will form a crucial part of a new Orbital Link Road around Aylesbury, providing a new route around the town, significantly easing congestion through the town centre and delivering new cycling and walking routes.
“We welcome the £13.4 million funding as part of the overall £147.9 million cost of the scheme; the council has worked extremely hard to secure the necessary finance to deliver this crucial infrastructure for the county which has also seen us successfully secure contributions from Homes England, HS2 Ltd and nearby developments.”

The scheme is also set to alleviate congestion from HS2’s plans for the Stoke Mandeville bypass. Work on the Buckinghamshire Council-led scheme is already well underway with phase one due to open late next year.
The SEARL scheme’s total cost is £147.9m. The requested DfT capital funding contribution in total is £13.472m (11%).
