Dementia Friendly Aylesbury is a collaborative project involving stakeholders, services users, charities, businesses and individuals who have expressed an interest in being involved in making Aylesbury a Dementia Friendly town.
In association with The Alzheimers society, Aylesbury has amassed more than 2500 Dementia Friends since the program began in 2016. They are champions in spreading awareness and understanding for our local residents with dementia across Aylesbury. They argue that from a simple request to improve lighting in a public area or making seating available, these are small changes that make a huge difference in our community.
The Dementia Friends have a Monthly Zoom call, where they engage with key institutions in Aylesbury, discussing how they can all work together to create an inclusive society in the town, you can access it here.
Schools, multicultural centres and many local businesses like Waterside Theatre, Natwest have joined the Aylesbury dementia friends, including Giles Ellerton, owner of Right at Home care service. He explains why he and his staff have joined the team:
"We want to insure that they get the best care not only from us but from wider members of the community, so that everyone that engages with them understands what dementia is and understands that people can live with a good quality of life living with dementia."
He also added that his experience of working with his patients with dementia has taught him:
"We need to engage with people living with dementia in our community and most importantly we need more compassion, so that people living with dementia feel not alone but included, involved and above all loved."
