"When thinking about adopting we really just focused on what we could provide. The support network around you, the love that you can give. The home we can provide is safe and comfortable and nurturing. That's what's more important to the children than our gender." - Sarah and Geraldine.
Last year, one in five adoptions in England were to same-sex couples. Sarah and Geraldine's experience of adopting two primary school aged children with Buckinghamshire Council is one story that the council is sharing during LGBTQ+ Adoption Week (3-9 March), as it celebrates the role that LGBTQ+ people can play in changing lives through adoption. The council will also be challenging perceptions about who can adopt and highlighting the support that is available when adopting with them.
Buckinghamshire Council is also hosting a special lunchtime information session on Tuesday 1 April where a guest speaker from the LGBTQ+ community will share their experience of adopting with the council. Everyone interested in adoption is encouraged to attend, places are limited so book now.
