The former One Direction singer, 31, was found dead in Buenos Aries.
It's being reported he fell from the balcony of his room on the 3rd floor at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel.
Earlier Payne had posted on social media, saying it was a "lovely day here in Argentina".
Payne originally found fame with One Direction in 2010 alongside Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Hary Styles and Zayn Malik. The band came 3rd on the X Factor before becoming one of the best selling groups of all-time.
He has spoken at length in the past about his struggles with fame and mental health,
He also has a son, 7 year old Bear, from his previous relationship with singer Cheyl.
