A local charity is shining a light on the help available for carers of dementia patients this Dementia Awareness Week.
More people in Bucks are being diagnosed with the disease every year. It was the leading cause of death in England and Wales in 2022.
45% of those living with dementia are fully dependent on a family carer or a friend and receive no NHS or council support.
Their media officer, Jules Sainter, says: “It’s just all encompassing, it’s exhausting, mentally and physically to be looking after somebody else all the time. What we’re doing is helping to provide some kind of support for their own mental health and mental wellbeing.”
The charity says carers often suffer “a toxic mix of guilt and bereavement for the virtual loss of a loved one.”
Jules has been speaking to Bucks Radio, and told us more about what they do and how local companies can help:
Dementia Carer’s Respite are hosting their very own ‘Celebrity Antiques Valuation Day’, where locals can have up to two items appraised by TV star Eric Knowles. There's more details below.
All proceeds will go towards funding professional respite care at home for Buckinghamshire’s family carers of dementia patients.
Their ‘Celebrity Antiques Day’ will take place at Waddenson Manor in Aylesbury on 20 June.
Joining host Eric Knowles are TV experts including John Benjamin, George Archdale, Josephine Fitzalan and Alastair Dickinson.
Conservation expert Phil Lyons will also join to give advice on restoring old, treasured items.
Tickets cost £25 (or £15 without valuation) and can be purchased here (external link).
