Man sentenced after Wendover anti-HS2 protest

Ross Monaghan, aged 38, from Jones Hill Wood, Wendover , was sentenced at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on Monday 26 July.

After a trial which lasted one day he was found guilty of charges including two charges of assault and four charges of criminal damage

The offences took place while Monaghan attended anti-HS2 protests at Jones Hill Wood in Wendover, between November 2020 and February this year.

At Jones Hill Wood he has assaulted two security guards leaving bruising and has caused criminal damage to fences.

After being found guilty, Monaghan was made to pay £775 in costs, and £50 to both assault victims

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: “Monaghan has been sentenced accordingly in High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court for breaking the law while attending anti-HS2 protests in Jones Hill Wood in Wendover.

“Monaghan, and any member of the public, all have the right to protest and demonstrate peacefully and within the law. Police only become involved in such protests if individuals break the law.

“If this happens, police will take action as necessary and bring people to court, if they act unlawfully.

“Thames Valley Police will continue to facilitate the rights of the public to protest and demonstrate peacefully, alongside the rights of HS2 to conduct their lawful business.”
