Mayor of Aylesbury announces Mayoral Charity of the Year on Bucks Radio

The Mayor of Aylesbury, Cllr Anders Christensen, has today (Friday 9 July) announced that local charity, Aylesbury Women’s Aid, is his chosen charity during his term as Mayor.

Cllr Christensen was elected as Town Mayor in May and, as part of his Mayoral term, has the privilege to choose a charity to support to raise funds for and raise the profile of the charity.

 Cllr Christensen, said:

“I am delighted to announce Aylesbury Women’s Aid as my Mayoral Charity of the Year. I have been conscious as a Councillor for a number of years about the issues around domestic violence in Aylesbury. I am delighted to have this opportunity be able to raise awareness and help to address the harm that those victims of violence in the home experience."

Aylesbury Women’s Aid works with and on behalf of women and children who are or have lived with domestic violence and offer support, information, advice, access to temporary safe accommodation and aftercare.

CEO of the charity, April Benson, told us what they are hoping to do as part of the being the Mayor's chosen charity:

"We'd like to improve one of the the outdoor garden spaces for when children are in their sessions with the child development workers. We do have a small garden but would like to make it bigger and better for safe play."

April also has this advice for anyone who is concerned about domestic abuse:

"If you, or someone you know, is experiencing domestic violence, then you can contact our services. You can call our phone number, we have a website, we've got a live chat service too. But I would stress that anyone who is immediate danger should call 999 and speak to the police.  You may not want to, but for your for your safety, you can.

We are a confidential service so you can access us. We don't share information with anyone unless there are safeguarding concerns, obviously. We are here to support you, and we are here to believe you as well."
