MP urges residents to show the love for local business this Valentine’s Day

Local MP, Sarah Green, is asking her constituents in Chesham and Amersham to support local shops, restaurants and pubs this Valentine's Day.

The 14th of February sees Britons collectively spend millions on gifts, experiences and gestures for loved ones. £668 million was spent during the romantic period in the UK in 2020, according to the Mastercard Love Index. This is up 355% from the £289 million spent in 2011.

With small businesses struggling to meet rising costs this year, Green is keen to see romantics keep their hard-earned cash in the local economy.

Buckinghamshire Business First and Buckinghamshire Local Enterprise Partnership's most recent quarterly 'Business Barometer' revealed the impact of the current economic situation on local enterprises.

More than half (54%) of respondents said that trading conditions were 'worse than normal'. Meanwhile, the number of firms reporting increased sales was down 31% from the previous quarter and those making a profit was down 26%.

These statistics reflect the results of Green's own cost-of-living survey which found nearly a quarter (23%) of local business owners hit by the crisis feared they may be forced to shut up shop due to rising costs.

Urging people to show some love for these local businesses this 14th February, Green said: "Many people look to treat their families, friends and partners on Valentine's Day. This year, I am hoping they will spread the love to local businesses as well.

"Why not take a look at what is available on our local high street?

"Spending locally is a great way to stimulate the local economy, create local jobs and help keep our much loved local businesses open.

"We are so lucky to have a wonderful array of locally owned shops, florists, restaurants and bars to choose from. I encourage everyone who is able to show them some love this Valentine's Day."
