A new lake has been planned in Buckinghamshire next to an existing quarry, which is set to be extended.
Around 290,000 tonnes of sand and gravel will be extracted from an extended 17-hectare area to the east of New Denham Quarry.
It comes as Buckinghamshire Council has approved the plans, which were first put forward by mineral extraction firm Summerleaze Ltd in March 2023.
The company said this week its works to extend the quarry are now due to start in June or July 2025 and are expected to finish in July 2027.
Its plans read: “The site will be restored using site derived materials to a lake, surrounded by tussocky grassland and species‐rich meadow, separated by hedgerows and woodland.”
The existing quarry is located due south of Junction 1 of the M40 motorway, while the extension area lies to the east of the site and immediately west of Knighton‐Way Lane.
Summerleaze says the nearest residential properties to the site on Knighton‐Way Lane will have at least a minimum 50m buffer between them and the mineral extraction works.
A spokesperson told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “Once the sand and gravel has been removed it will be restored as a lake and incorporated into the wider restored landholdings of the quarry.”
Summerleaze, which was founded in 1928, said the first sand and gravel were sold from the site in 2009 and since then quarry has sold around 3.6 million tonnes to local markets.
