Police Community Support Officers have been out in the area, handing advice to residents with caravans and motorhome son their drive.
This is due to an increase in thefts of Caravans and Motorhomes in the area.
Below is some security advice if you own a Caravan or Motorhome:
· Install CCTV covering the area where it is parked.
· Lighting – Is the area where it is parked lit up? Consider a sensor security light which comes on if it detects movement. This will alert you if someone is on your property.
· Install a secure bollard in front of it. This is a visual deterrent.
· Fit a wheel clamp – Another visual deterrent - Be wary of ones which can be removed by simply deflating the tyre.
· Install a Tracker – Look for systems which have passed the requirements of the Sold Secure Standard – confirming their sustainability for caravan use, their durability and resistance to attack. A tracker may help to locate it if it has been stolen.
· Consider having your postcode etched into any glass surface – including headlights. This helps to identify that it belongs to you in the event that it is stolen and the thieves have scratched the VIN number off.
· Window and door locks – In older models, check the condition of them, Do they need replacing?
· Consider installing an alarm – some companies can include it on your home alarm system so it may be worth contacting them.
· Remove anything of value when not travelling. Leave the cupboards open to show that there are no contents in there.
· Mark your caravan – you can do this by simply using a UV pen and writing your postcode in concealed places. In the event that it is stolen, it will make it easier to identify that it is yours if the thieves have scratched the VIN number off.
· For Motorhomes – Consider getting an Immobiliser fitted. This will not protect your contents but it should stop it from being driven away.
By following these steps, you will make your Caravan or Motorhome less desirable to thieves.
