Wanted terrorist 'White Widow' from Aylesbury splits from husband and flees to Yemen

Samantha Lewthwaite, also known as The White Widow

One of the world's most wanted terrorists, Samantha Lewthwaite, who grew up in Aylesbury, has reportedly left her fourth husband and fled a safe haven in Somalia to hide out in war-torn Yemen.

The 38-year-old, also known as 'White Widow' by intelligence agencies, is suspected of being involved in the deaths of up to 400 people and is the subject of an Interpol Red Notice requesting her arrest with a view to extradition.

Regarding her recent movements, a security source told The Mirror: "Lewthwaite and Sheikh Hassan are no longer together - it is thought they are divorced. She had protection from his family in a no-go area in Somalia but now she is not welcome and has gone back to al-Qaeda controlled Yemen."

Born in December 1983 in Northern Ireland and the daughter of a British soldier, her family moved to Northern Road in Aylesbury in the early 1990s. She attended Elmhurst middle school and The Grange secondary school. Her full name is Samantha Louise Lewthwaite.

It was during her time in Aylesbury that she converted to Islam, seemingly in response to her parents' divorce. Ultimately, this led to her meeting Germaine Lindsay at a ‘Stop the War’ rally in London. She married him in October 2002.

A little under three years later, Lindsay blew himself up on the Piccadilly Line on the London Underground, killing 26 other people as part of the 7/7 attack on the capital. 52 people died in total.

Lewthwaite, who has two children by Lindsay, was brought in for questioning by police but was not held and fled the country soon after. She has been on the run ever since.

She is known to have spent time in South Africa, Tanzania, Somalia and Kenya, latterly under the protection of terrorist group Al-Shabaab.

She is linked to various terrorist attacks, including a grenade attack at a bar in Mombasa in 2012 in which three people were killed and the Westgate Shopping Mall attack in Nairobi in 2013 which left 71 people dead and hundreds more injured.

Samantha Lewthwaite, also known as Sherafiyah Lewthwaite, is now the mother of four children and thought to be in Yemen, where she's suspected of continuing to recruit suicide bombers.

The International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) is currently hunting 7,479 of the world’s most dangerous people, with Lewthwaite prominent among them. She is wanted on charges of possession of explosives and conspiracy to commit a felony.
