Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is proud to announce a significant improvement in the performance of its Accident and Emergency Department (A&E), at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
In March 2025, Stoke Mandeville Hospital A&E met the national standard of 78% of people being seen, treated and discharged or admitted to hospital within four hours of arrival at A&E.
As a result, the department has climbed from 48th to 18th place in the country for A&E performance (comparing results from Q4 of 2024/25 to Q4 of 2023/24) and is consistently now the second-best performing A&E in the South East region. Ambulance handover times have also significantly reduced during this period.
This improvement has been thanks to a huge amount of hard work from the Trust team over the last two years. Changes have been made to ensure that patients are seen by the most appropriate clinician, in the right place, first time.
This has included: Improving the rapid assessment and treatment of patients who arrive by ambulance, opening a new 21 bed Emergency Medical Receiving Unit (EMRU) – a specialised unit designed to look after people who need a short-stay bed before returning home, Same Day Emergency Services (SDECs) providing emergency care without the need for a hospital admission, supporting more patients to receive hospital-level care in their own home via the Hospital@Home programme, working with council partners to reduce the delays to discharge for people who need ongoing care.
Chief Operating Officer, Raghuv Bhasin said: "This reduction in waiting times is the result of a concerted team effort by colleagues not just within our A&E department but across Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and beyond. The improvement in our national ranking comes from the dedication and leadership of the Bucks team who are committed to continuing to improve the care we provide to the residents of the county.”
