Wycombe Wanderers player subjected to 'offensive chants'

Adebayo Akinfenwa

Wycombe Wanderers footballer Adebayo Akinfenwa was subjected to offensive chants from the visitors' fans during his side’s League One match against MK Dons on Saturday.

The veteran striker, 39, had started the game on the bench but when he warmed-up on the side of the pitch during the first-half he became the target of abuse.

The referee temporarily halted the match.

While it has been reported that one man was removed from the Adams Park stadium, no arrests had been made at the time of going to press.

An investigation has been launched by Thames Valley Police and work is taking place to identify witnesses. Police are appealing to the public for information.

Chief Inspector Graham Hadley, of Thames Valley Police, said: “We are appealing to anyone who was at the football game on Saturday and may be able to help us in our investigations.

“Offensive chanting of any type is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

“I’d be particularly keen to hear from anyone who has mobile phone footage to please check this and contact us if it has captured anything that can assist the investigation.

“You can report online, or by calling 101, quoting reference number 43220043475, or for 100% anonymity, call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
